brief layali, ah ya ana, followed by the qasida.. this is a sublime interpretation by Abdel Hay Effendi. he takes his time with every passage on this 12" record. zonophon version which he recorded 4 years earlier can be found here

anyone know what sound he's making at minute 7:14? lol

I bet Fred will find the filtering just perfect. It is a bit too harsh to my personal taste, though.

Literally stunning! His "excursion" (I thought this word is more appropriate than "incursion") in sikah at 3'53" is both unexpected and incredible that one wonders how he would have returned to bayati without the help of the musicians, but then he does it again at 5' , and this time the musicians let go. Yet, he incredibly manages to return to bayati as easily as they did. His segmentation of tunlike these two, Uhe lyrics systematically breaking the verse unity against the standard of the qasidah 'ala-l-wahdah is worth a thorough study of its own.

He says: "kutuk kutuk kutuk", and this is a typical Hilmi signature that we find in other qasidah interpretations just like “ya ‘adhmi” and “ya-mhammad”. Unlike these two, it sounds like a sort of onomatopea that doesn’t refer to any hidden or surface meaning.
Regardless of the presence of a literal meaning or not, my feeling is that this is a relatively frequent feature in some categories of speech that confers to them a magical or mysterious dimension beyond the reach of human mind. Art as well as whichcraft and religion belong to that category.

seamless! the ajnas of bayati and sigah go hand in hand. since jins sigah exist naturally within jins bayati (they share 3 of the same pitches). but if there were ever a way to properly go in and out of these two ajnas, this is the way!

Thanks a lot, and here's my own moderately filtered and slightly slowed down version.
