الشيخ سيد الصفتي
موشح/ غضي جفونك
موال/ لا تحسب إن البعاد يفرقنا إذا طول
مقام صبا
Shaykh Sayyid al-Ṣaftī
muwashshaḥ / Ghoḍḍī gefūnik (maqām ṣabā, cycle awfar)
mawwāl a‘rag / Lā teḥseb enn el-be‘ād yifriqna eza ṭawwel (maqām ṣabā)
Baidaphon 1322/1323, obviously the first Baidaphon Egyptian series.
A muwashshaḥ by a young Ṣaftī is always a treat. One feels it is too short. The way Ṣahlūn, in his translation/targama, decides to switch to qarār at 1'23 and again at 2'07 is sheer delight.
The lyrics given by Ḥabīb Zaydān for the khāna (p. 199) do not match what I hear in this recording, but I really cannot make out the words.
As for the mawwāl, we already know it as bayyāti, in a heartbreaking rendition by ‘Abd al-Ḥayy Ḥilmī here
this is the ṣabā rendition. Wana moghram ṣabāba fik ya shaykh Sayyid.
As for Ṣahlūn, he truly deserves the "ya katākītak" at the end of his conclusive taqsīm.
