    إفتراضي kanun music

well, it is well known that Mr.Paul has maintained a HUGE thread over at the zeryab forum dedicated to masters of the oud.

I was thinking, maybe we could have a kanun thread over in the turkish/eastern music section, where we could do something similar. I would be the main beneficiary, and I am speaking with my own personal interest in mind, considering how much I adore the thing.

I don't know what you folks think, but I'm dying for any kanun recordings.

    إفتراضي I like the idea

    Let's start!

We can start with Turkish Kanunis but we can also do Arabic ones in one thread, that's fine.

Good idea, I second this proposal. I'm not very deep into kanun music, but would be happy to get more knowledge of the varieties of playing this instrument. And I think I'll find some samples in my collection to contribute - though without knowing much about how to judge or classify the music, so I really hope to learn some things out of it.

then I have something to look forward to while I'm doing my [damned] tests,

and, it appears everybody is benefiting from this (mainly me though).

Hi, do you know any page or address in the Internet which is about the Kanun, describing it in detail. I remember that in a fancy restaurant in Tunis we saw a kanunist very good, and he played for us the song "Ghani Li shway shway". There were some small switches or buttons in his kanun, which I think he moved to change the tone of some strings (rise or lower a quarter or maybe a third of a tone), but I am not sure, and could not find any information on this. Thank you.

    Dear Luis,

    here are some basic references.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanun_%28instrument%29

    http://www.turkmusikisi.com/calgilar.../kanun_eng.htm

    Some turkish style Kanun:

    Some Arabic Style Kanun:

These are just examples of what you can find with google and youtube. I suggest you explore more.
Somebody might be able to suggest an actual book or reference, but I doubt there are many references dedicated to this instrument in english.

A Tunisian myself, I know the restaurant and the musician very well. He has been performing there for years. I''m not aware of specialized websites, but, like 3amr, I suppose it shouldn't be difficult to find a few interesting things just searching google. Some basic information is available on the website of the Syrian qanun maker (a very good one, by the way) Nabil Kassis who's member of this forum here
